Justice Sujata V Manohar

Mrs. ‘Justice Sujata Vasant Manohar’ (Justice Sujata V. Manohar) was born on 28th August, 1934. Her father Late K.T. Desai was the Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court. She was educated in Bombay (India), Oxford (UK), and London (UK).

She was enrolled as an advocate on 14th February 1958 in Bombay. She was appointed as Assistant Government Pleader during 1970- 1971. She was appointed as Additional Judge of the Bombay High Court on 23rd January 1978. She was appointed as Permanent Judge of the Bombay High Court on 28 November 1978. She was appointed as Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court on 15th January 1994.

Justice Sujata V. Manohar became the first woman Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court. She transferred as Chief Justice of Kerala High Court on 21 April 1994. She was elevated as the Supreme Court Judge on 8th November 1994. She retired on 27th August 1999. After her retirement, she was appointed to the National Human Rights Commission, a post she continues to hold, and is a patron of the Oxford University Commonwealth Law Journal.
